Cormorant fishing is a traditional fishing method in which fishermen use trained aquatic shags to fish in rivers, in this case in Southern China. To control the birds, the fishermen tie a snare around the bird's throat to prevent it from swallowing larger fish, which are held in their throat, while it can still swallow smaller fish. When a cormorant has caught a fish, the fisherman brings the bird back to the boat and has the bird spit it up.
